The COVID-19 pandemic forced many parents to work from home (WFH), creating new challenges in balancing work and parenting. A national survey found that 1 in 4 parents (25%) reported a decline in their mental health. This increased stress often contributes to more frequent conflicts between parents and children.

	👤 Target UserBased on our research, we targeted&#38;nbsp;WFH parents with children aged 2 to 6.&#38;nbsp;Children under 2 have demanding physiological needs, while after age 6, many parents described their kids as more socially independent and less interested in parent interaction.
With this in mind, we framed our challenge as:&#38;nbsp;How might we help WFH parents achieve a balance between parenting and working?&#38;nbsp;

	



	
	🔁 Concept Development &#38;amp; Iteration
Ground in&#38;nbsp;our research findings, we explored two early directions that addressed the key challenges faced by working parents.&#38;nbsp;After presenting both ideas to parents, we decided to move forward with the Collaborative Art Platform.

This led us to refine our design prompt: How might we reduce children’s screen time while helping parents strengthen their bond with their children?
By focusing on creativity, independence, and emotional connection, this direction directly addressed the two most consistent pain points we heard: guilt around screen use and the emotional fatigue of switching between work and parenting.
	




	
	✍🏻 Early Sketches &#38;amp; Information Architecture

With this structure in place, each team member took responsibility for sketching one section of the app. I focused on the “Find Activities” section, exploring how users might discover relevant, engaging content efficiently.

	👩🏻‍💻 User TestingWe conducted 2 rounds of usability testing with 7 participants, using scenario-based tasks and a think-aloud protocol to uncover friction points and gather real-time feedback. Each round focused on a different area of the experience, leading to three key refinements:
Community Sharing → Idea Sharing
Originally, the community page allowed parents to share photos of their children’s completed activities. However, users raised concerns about privacy. In response, we shifted the focus to sharing activity ideas instead, promoting inspiration and collaboration while respecting personal boundaries.

	Filter Improvements
The original filtering interface was unintuitive and time-consuming. We simplified the design and introduced smart defaults based on onboarding preferences (e.g., activity duration, number of children), making discovery faster and more relevant.

	Material Preferences
Users found managing supplies across two separate pages confusing. We merged “Materials at Home” and “Materials to Omit” into a single, streamlined interface, allowing parents to quickly tailor activity recommendations to their available resources.

	🎨 UI &#38;amp; BrandingTo attract and satisfy both parents and children, the UI need to be simple,&#38;nbsp;clear, and quick to navigate, while also conveying a delightful and playful mood. The design balances ease of use for busy parents with a tone that feels welcoming and fun.For our primary brand color, we chose green, inspired by the name Polliwog—another word for tadpole. This not only tied back to our brand metaphor but also helped reinforce a sense of playfulness and boldness.

	00.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Problem SpaceCommunication between guests and employees is lacking, affecting the rating of the hotel.&#38;nbsp;

Due to COVID-19, Ace Hotel Pittsburgh ended up being closed; therefore, they couldn’t answer our emails or calls. In order to get an idea of the areas of improvements at Ace Hotel, we read through various reviews from travel sites to categorize and address any glaring problems.&#38;nbsp;

	01.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Motion StudiesIndividually, we created our own interpretations of what each emotion would convey. Afterwards, we came back together to compare how we represented each emotion.&#38;nbsp;
This helped us establish what movements worked best for the future CUI we create. Alongside this process, we started to ideate on form and what the CUI would look like.

	03.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; What is HUNTER?
Hunter’s visuals are based off of Ace Hotel Pittsburgh’s branding system - rustic, urban, &#38;amp; restorative.
After many discussions and iterations, we decided to shift the look of our CUI from a symbol to type spelling out ”Hunter.” We decided that working with type creates a more humanistic feel, which helped us finalize the style of the animation.With the key words “rustic, urban, ‘hipstery,’&#38;nbsp; these words helped us determine the name “Hunter.” This helped us shift towards a more collage-like style of animation. We wanted to use parts of the images we found, but add our own touch to it—much like what Ace Hotel did to their reconstruction.

	04.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; StoryboardingIn our concept video, we focused on 3 components: ✧ Simplify services
✧ Help employee workload✧ Generate recommendations &#38;amp; tips&#38;nbsp;First, our group put together a script that goes through the journey of a typical guest and what the CUI could do to enhance their experience. With the script and storyboard in mind, the team and I collected photos of the restaurant and hotel to visualize the experiences guests and employees have in these spaces.&#38;nbsp;

	05.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; InterfaceFor proof of concept, with the help of the storyboard, we designed specific screens of the application for both guests and employees.Because Ace Hotel Pittsburgh does not have an application under its name, we were not restricted to any existing interface, but we still stuck to the visual branding system.&#38;nbsp;

To stick to the mood and feel of Ace Hotel Pittsburgh, the illustration style the assets to be collage-like.&#38;nbsp;
After editing the photos to be duo-tone, we removed part of the image to add line art, creating a collage-like visual. With this mix of photography and line art, the concept video shows urban and hipster-like elements.&#38;nbsp;

	00.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Raw DataWhat is the state of design today?&#38;nbsp;Every year, AIGA releases data about design and the people behind it. After downloading the data sets, my teammates and I were surprised by the number of designers who participated in the survey. Our next step was to figure out how to narrow down our scope.

	01.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Selecting the TopicWhat can we learn from and tell based on the data? 
How can designers use data beyond the purpose of information delivery?
By analyzing these questions and the AIGA 2019 Design Census, we were most drawn to visualizing data that is most connected to emotions; therefore, we chose the “How Satisfied are Designers?” section of the census. Within “How Satisfied are Designers,” there were 7 sub-sections. We chose to focus on “Satisfaction + Salary,” which is showcased by discipline type.&#38;nbsp;

	02.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Theme SelectionWhat concerns young designers?&#38;nbsp;As we were analyzing the data, we noticed that it was not as hopeful as we thought it would be. We realized there are a lot of people experiencing uncertainty and stress, and at the same time, we were concerned about our futures, too.
Because we are young designers ourselves and close to finishing college, we wanted to create something that would alleviate the anxiety that comes with worrying about one’s future. From that goal, we decided to make our audience undergraduate designers going into the “real” world. &#38;nbsp;

	“Will I ever get a job? I wish I can see the future...”
There are times when we will say these things to ourselves. This thought led us to our idea of using fortune telling. Because fortune telling, astrology, and tarot cards have developed a pop culture appeal, rather than focusing on the experience, we used the visual language of the mystical process of telling the future. 
We decided to connect the theme to not only fortune telling, but also dry/satirical humor that is relatable and is present in the current media culture (i.e. memes). The project is essentially a guide/fortune teller that helps young designers to feel that “the real world can be hard, but [they] are not alone.”


	



	
	03.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Data AnalysisFrom the raw data, we selected 4 categories to focus on: 
✧ 1-4 years work experience✧ Type of design discipline&#38;nbsp;✧ Annual income✧ How satisfied they are&#38;nbsp;
When parsing through the data, we each had 5 disciplines to organize. It was quite interesting to see how large of a gap certain disciplines had. For example, Graphic/Communication Design has 1,928 of the 9,429 total designers in the census while Game Design only has 18.

	04.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; User JourneyHow will the user interact with these tools?&#38;nbsp;The user journey map shows step by step of how the user will interact with the box and the assets within it. Each of these printed materials have a different function. Because we want this resource to be accessible to young designers in college, this box will live in studio spaces or advisory offices.

For the visual system, we created moodboards and asked 10+ college students what colors reminded them of tarot cards/fortune telling.&#38;nbsp;

	00.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;TimelineWHAT HAPPENED WITHIN 6 MONTHS?For brand development, the timeline was organized into three stages: Recruitment, Promotion, and ‘Day-of-Show.’ Around December, the teams were split into smaller task groups: Posters, Merch and Booklet. I was in the Posters task group and was in charge of the Merch group.

	01.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; LG Recruitment/Promotion of OrganizationTHESE ASSETS WERE DESIGNED WITH LUNAR GALA’S PREEXISTING BRANDING AND STYLE GUIDELINES.&#38;nbsp;Because I was abroad from September to December, I couldn’t take part in designing and producing the business cards and sponsorship packages; therefore, I focused on designing the Interest Poster and helped develop &#38;amp; finalize the visual identity of the 2020 LG theme Yesterday.&#38;nbsp;

	02.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Visual Identity“YESTERDAY EXISTS AS A LIMINAL SPACE IN TENSION BETWEEN PAST AND FUTURE. DOES OUR DISTORTED MEMORY OF THE PAST ALTER THE EVENTS OF THE PRESENT?”&#38;nbsp;Yesterday celebrates the dynamic changes the Steel City has undergone throughout history. It explores the tension of what happened yesterday and what could happen tomorrow.&#38;nbsp; As students and as a community, we are undergoing a period of change that leaves us with conflicting feelings of nostalgia, apprehension, and hope. This year’s show invites viewers of the Pittsburgh community to explore what “change” has meant to them and how this affects our vision of the future.
This year‘s theme branding fell heavily on typography. To communicate the message of Yesterday and its shifting, liminal quality, we combined two complementing typefaces in the same line. We used the stylized serif Zermatt and mixed it with Bai Jamjuree, a very square &#38;amp; modern sans serif.
Color treatment was based primarily around available risograph inks, which then informed the palette for non-riso assets.

	03.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; PromotionTHESE POSTERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA ASSETS WERE WAYS FOR LG TO GET THE PITTSBURGH COMMUNITY TO BE CURIOUS AND INTERESTED IN WHAT’S TO COME IN THIS YEAR’S SHOW.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
To advertise this year’s theme, we printed posters on both riso graph printers and laser printers. Luckily, we got access to the school’s one and only riso printer and did not need to outsource printing. 
For the social media assets, we mirrored the qualities of the riso posters and the photography used within them. We made a banner for LG members to put on Facebook as their cover photos and made Instagram ads for the LG’s social media team to post on the organization’s account. &#38;nbsp;

	04.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Day-of-ShowWHAT DOES THE MERCH LOOK LIKE? WHO GETS WHAT?Following our visual system, I took advantage of type for the merch. The tan colored products were for attendees to purchase while the black t-shirt was for in-house members to wear at the end of the show. The tan long sleeve shirt and tote bag utilize the theme’s brief while the black short sleeve has a list of all the lines’ names that were showcased. 
Inspired by museum entrance stickers, Jaclyn, the head of the Print team, suggested that I designed based on a sticker format, so I mirrored both the poster and website assets onto the stickers (i.e. poster background, website supplementary colors).

	**I WAS NOT A PART OF THE BOOKLET TEAM, BUT HERE ARE SOME PICTURES OF THE FINALIZED OUTCOME!**The 32-page show booklet was printed with Perfectly Acceptable Press in Chicago, IL. Risograph felt like the perfect treatment for the booklet and other print materials because of the weight and effect of the ink—it made the artifact special, as a token of memory for the event itself.

✧ This is my first year joining the creative team, and I am so glad that I joined the Print team this year. 
✧ With existing friendships with the members in the team, I believe that this allowed our bonds to grow stronger.&#38;nbsp;
